Journalism Conference

These days here at the conference have been none stop busy. I feels more like a couple of weeks than a couple of days because the days are so jam-packed. Today I got to visit the capitol for my first time. It was extraordinary and super gorgeous. The crazy thing that happened today was that we just happened to miss the shooting at capitol hill today. I am thanking my lucky stars that WJMC wasn’t there to get possibly hurt. I think it would’ve been a great experience to see and report the event.

I’ve never been to D.C. until this week and I may be experiencing everything in super speed mode but I’m enjoying every bit of it. I got the chance to visit the Lincoln Memorial (Lincoln is the coolest president!) and the ever so famous Smithsonian. My feet may be aching from the excessive amount of walking and yet I still have a huge smile on my face.

I’ve met so many people so far this week. So many that I’m lucky if I can remember their names. I think it is amazing to be here with my peers from all over the US that share an interest in journalism. Everyone that I’ve met was pretty cool and I’ve started friendships with some of them. I’ve even started to pick up a little of their accents (crazy, right?).

I have to say that I’m glad I didn’t give up on the fundraisers to get here. It was well worth it and I would’ve regreted not coming. I’ve gained so much experience and knowledge of journalism. And most importantly: I’m learning more about myself.

Monday my group had our student media group at WGMU, the radio station. This really sparked my interest. Allison(a really cool girl who is in the same group as I am) and I made a podcast together. I think the podcast was fun and I loved it.

Yesterday I got the wonderful opportunity to listen to Kevin McCarthy. He really made radio a definite possiblity for me. What he spoke about inspires me.  Now I want to go out and try different things.

Because of these two opportunities, I am thinking of maybe pursuing a career in this field.

Hi, I am Ashley Browe I am seventeen years old.I last attended Orchard View High School in Muskegon, MI but I currently moved to Eckerman, MI. I will be attending Whitefish Twp. Community School in the fall for my senior year. I’ve been  an honor roll student for many years. I’ve grown to love theater and have taken theater classes for two years. Math is my strong point and I enjoy working out math problems. I know that I want to stay in Michigan for college but I’m not sure what career I want to pursue. I’ve found interest in brodcasting journalism, theater and teaching. Hopefully this conference will help with my decisions.

Today was a chaotic day for me but It was the good kind of chaos. I feel impowered because I successfully completed my first flight alone. I hope that this conference will help me decide on whether journalism is the career for me. George Mason is a very impressive school. I wouldn’t go to school here because it is so far from home. I loved the speaker, Brian Lamb, that spoke today. He included us, the students, in is speaking. I liked how he had us build our ideas off of each other. He definitely impressed me tonight.

I hope that this week fullfills my expectations and hopes. I’m also excited to get to know others and their point of views.
